The gunshots came out of the blue. An Army psychiatrist, trained to treat soldiers under stress, allegedly opened fire yesterday in a crowded medical building at Fort Hood, Texas. When the assault ended minutes later, the attack had become what is believed to be the largest mass shooting to occur on a U.S. military base. Twelve were killed, 31 wounded. More »

Exemption in House bill shields Isle health care law

WASHINGTON — A health care overhaul bill that the House could vote on as soon as tomorrow contains language to ensure that Hawaii's expansive health coverage requirements wouldn't be weakened. Specifically, provisions inserted into the almost 2,000-page bill by Hawaii's congressional delegation would protect the state's Prepaid Health Care Act of 1974 from any changes imposed by the new federal legislation. Girl, 15, reported missing Sunday found in good health

A 15-year-old Hilo girl who was reported missing Sunday night has been found, Big Island police said. Meghan Olcott was last seen leaving her home about 10 p.m. Sunday. Big Island police issued a bulletin Wednesday and she was found later that day in Hilo. More »

Dogs suspected in attack that killed goat and 4 sheep

Four sheep and a 280-pound goat were killed either by pet or feral dogs within a fenced area of the Maui Coastal Land Trust's Waihee Refuge earlier this week, refuge officials said. In addition, 26 other sheep were injured in the attack Monday and three of those animals were euthanized because they were badly injured, said Jay Carpio, one of the owners of the herd of sheep. 2 police motorcycle officers suffer injuries after collision

Two police motorcycle officers suffered minor injuries yesterday when they were involved in a collision on Valkenburgh Street near Honolulu International Airport. Michelle Yu, police department spokeswoman, said one of the officers swerved to avoid a car and laid his motorcycle down, and that the second officer's motorcycle "clipped" the first. More »
